Thailand’s Weak Baht and Tourism Stimulus Are Rewriting the Travel Math
A softer currency, hotel subsidies and restored visa access for Indian travelers create a compelling window for arrivals ahead of high season.
Something shifted in Thailand this summer. Not the beaches or the temples, which remain exactly as they should be. The numbers shifted.
At 33.5 baht to the dollar as of early July 2026, the Thai currency has softened enough through the second quarter that visitors from dollar-pegged economies are finding their spending power noticeably expanded. A dinner that cost $45 last year now runs closer to $38. The boutique hotel upgrade that felt indulgent suddenly looks reasonable. These margins add up across a two week trip.
But currency is only part of the equation. The Thai government is backing its weaker baht with aggressive fiscal moves designed to pull travelers in before peak season arrives.
Worth noting: these figures remain estimates, and several elements of the package still require final cabinet approval and budget allocation.
The Stimulus Package Taking Shape
Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul has proposed a 2.45 billion baht tourism package, roughly $73 million at current rates, targeting both domestic and international demand. The centerpiece resembles the popular Thai Teaw Thai Plus scheme from previous years, offering a 50 percent accommodation subsidy capped at 3,000 baht per booking, approximately $90.
Initial allocations cover 500,000 benefits, first come first served.
The domestic component alone is projected to generate around 32 billion baht in economic activity, close to $950 million. Government estimates for the full package run higher, with some projections reaching 56 billion baht in total economic value and more than 23 billion baht attributed specifically to foreign visitor spending.
The timeline matters. If funding flows before November, the high season benefits directly. Delays push impact into 2027.
Beyond hotel subsidies, the package includes domestic flight incentives and support for international air connectivity. Proposals have floated around subsidized domestic flights and, more ambitiously, free flights for certain foreign visitors, though specifics on the latter remain thin. What matters is the direction: the government is treating tourism stimulus as fiscal priority, not afterthought.
India Returns to Visa Free Access
The other major development happened more quietly but carries significant weight for Thailand’s travel demand outlook.
Thirty day visa free entry for Indian passport holders was restored, removing one of the primary friction points that had suppressed arrivals from South Asia’s largest outbound market. The Tourism Authority of Thailand offices in New Delhi and Mumbai, led by Khajornrit Khwanmongkol and Nattachit Oonsiam respectively, have been preparing for what authorities expect to be a substantial uptick.
Projections estimate Indian arrivals could reach 2.7 million visitors over the coming year if momentum holds.
The spending profile makes this particularly interesting. Indian tourists average approximately 6,200 baht per day, around $185, with total trip expenditure averaging 36,000 baht or roughly $1,075 per visit. These are not budget backpackers. They are families, couples, MICE delegates and repeat leisure travelers who book mid to upper tier accommodations and spend on dining, shopping and experiences.
If the 2.7 million projection materializes, even partially, the revenue implications run into the billions.

What This Means for the Market
The stimulus measures are designed to stimulate short haul leisure, MICE and family travel rather than long haul luxury segments. Direct beneficiaries include mid range hotels, domestic carriers, regional tour operators and the F&B and retail sectors that depend on foot traffic.
Bangkok will absorb the largest share, but secondary destinations like Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and Pattaya are positioned to capture meaningful spillover, particularly as domestic flight incentives make multi city itineraries more affordable.
Outcomes depend on several variables beyond policy. Airline capacity remains constrained on certain routes, and full restoration of pre-pandemic frequencies is still underway. Seasonal demand patterns will concentrate impact in the November through February high season and around Songkran. Implementation timing, as noted, determines whether travelers can actually access subsidies before booking windows close.
Still, the fundamentals point in a clear direction. A weaker baht makes Thailand cheaper. Hotel subsidies make it cheaper still. Visa free access removes bureaucratic drag from a high spending source market. Domestic flight discounts enable longer, more dispersed trips.
Each measure alone would move the needle slightly. Together, they create a compounding effect.
The Near Term Window
For travelers weighing Southeast Asian options, Thailand’s value proposition is as strong as it has been in years. The currency advantage is real and measurable. The stimulus programs, while still requiring some final approvals, signal clear government intent to make tourism a budget priority.
Indian travelers, in particular, face a notably simpler path than they have in recent years. No visa paperwork, competitive flight options, and a destination that already knows how to cater to their preferences.
The practical advice is straightforward: if Thailand has been on the list, the math currently favors moving it up. Book accommodations early enough to access subsidy programs if they launch as expected. Watch for domestic flight deals that make multi destination itineraries feasible. And recognize that peak season demand, with these incentives in play, may tighten availability faster than usual.
Nothing is guaranteed until budgets are allocated and programs go live. But the signals are consistent, the currency is cooperative, and the government is spending real money to make this work.
