How Phuket’s Leading Women’s Charity Is Transforming Lives: Inside PIWC with Jo Hall

The Phuket International Women’s Club (PIWC) has supported over 1,700 students through higher education since 1989. As of February 2026, PIWC continues to create doctors, lawyers, teachers, and business leaders who are now giving back to their own communities.

Thirty-Six Years of Educational Impact

PIWC’s mission is straightforward but powerful: provide educational scholarships to bright but disadvantaged Thai students who might otherwise be forced to discontinue their education. The organization partners with approximately six schools across Phuket, conducting detailed interviews to select students each year.

“We will select a number of students each year that we will sponsor right the way through university,” Hall shares. “To date we’ve supported over 1,700 students. Which is fantastic and now that alumni are lawyers, are doctors, are professionals and they’re also giving back to their local communities as well which is fabulous.”

The organization’s financial transparency is exemplary—100% of donations go directly to the scholarship fund, with all work done by volunteers. Representing 23 countries from around the world, PIWC creates a multicultural association where women can meet new friends while contributing to transformative change.

From Corporate Leadership to Community Impact

Hall’s journey to charitable work in Phuket is itself inspiring. Her career trajectory includes navigating male-dominated corporate environments where “everybody smoked, everybody swore, there was a lot of shouting going on, but it was fun.” By age 28, she had been promoted to buying manager, leapfrogging her married male peers. “We were opening a lot of stores and doing a lot of deals and hustling.”

Her resilience was tested during Woolworths’ financial collapse. “I lost my house, my income, my car, my school fees. I lost everything,” she recalls candidly. Rather than returning to the UK defeated, Hall chose to stay in Asia—a decision that ultimately led to her involvement with Phuket’s charitable community.

Now settled in Phuket, Hall sees the island as home. “We definitely see Phuket as our new home and we’ve changed all of our addresses and everything is now moved to Phuket,” she explains. “The Thai people are an absolute delight.”

Expanding the Vision: Business Networking Meets Charity

True to her entrepreneurial spirit, Hall is introducing a ladies business networking group within PIWC, designed for both Thai women and expats. This initiative recognizes that Phuket’s community includes accomplished professionals from various industries who can benefit from structured networking while supporting educational scholarships.

“There’s a wealth of experience here,” Hall notes, referring to Phuket’s often-overlooked professional community. The timing is particularly relevant as Phuket evolves as a hub for digital nomads and remote workers alongside traditional expats. Professional networking opportunities that combine social connection with charitable purpose offer exactly what many seek: friends with purpose.

    How PIWC Functions

PIWC operates through membership fees that contribute directly to scholarships, supplemented by fundraising activities including:

    • Monthly fundraising lunches at different restaurants across Phuket
    • Special interest clubs including mahjong, bridge, tennis, golf, cooking, and gardening
    • Coffee mornings hosted by members in their homes
    • Annual fundraising events bringing the community together

Members can engage as much or as little as their schedules allow, from attending monthly lunches to taking on committee leadership roles. Full-time residents and part-time visitors are equally welcome.

The Ripple Effect of Educational Investment

What makes PIWC’s work particularly powerful is its focus on education as the foundation for breaking cycles of poverty. Unlike programs providing temporary relief, educational scholarships create permanent change. A sponsored student who becomes a doctor doesn’t just improve their own life—they serve their community for decades, often supporting their families and mentoring others.

This multiplier effect means the 1,700 students supported to date have likely impacted tens of thousands of additional lives through their professional work and community contributions.

    Getting Involved

For women living in or relocating to Phuket, PIWC offers multiple entry points. Beyond membership, individuals can sponsor specific students, make one-time or recurring donations, or volunteer for fundraising and administrative work.

For expatriates settling in Phuket, involvement with PIWC addresses critical needs that pure social networking cannot—purpose and meaning, cultural integration, professional fulfillment, and authentic community built on shared values rather than just shared circumstances.

    A Community That Transforms Lives

The story of PIWC and Jo Hall’s involvement illustrates something often overlooked about expatriate life in Southeast Asia—the opportunity to build meaningful community through charitable work. While Phuket’s beaches initially attract residents, it’s organizations like PIWC that transform temporary visitors into permanent community members.

Hall’s journey from corporate leadership through crisis to community building demonstrates that success takes many forms. Her current work supporting educational scholarships represents a different kind of leadership—one measured not in revenue generated, but in lives transformed and communities strengthened.
