Yuan in Thai Trade Deals: What’s Changing?

Yuan in Thai Trade: The Quiet Currency Shift Reshaping How Thailand Does Business

Chinese currency settlements have overtaken the yen for Thai importers, signaling a broader realignment in regional trade finance.

The Numbers Tell a Story

Something shifted in Thailand’s trade corridors this year, and most people outside banking circles missed it entirely. Yuan denominated transactions now account for roughly 5% of Thai trade settlements, a figure that sounds modest until you realize it has eclipsed the Japanese yen as a settlement currency. For a country that has conducted cross border commerce in US dollars for decades, this represents more than a statistical footnote.

The dollar still dominates, covering approximately 80% of Thailand’s import export transaction volume. That reality is not changing anytime soon. But the edges of the system are moving, and the movement is accelerating faster than conventional wisdom predicted.

Yuan denominated transactions now account for roughly 5% of Thai trade settlements, a figure that sounds modest until you realize it has eclipsed the Japanese yen as a settlement currency.

A Decade of Diversification

Consider the trajectory. In 2015, Thai imports settled in non key currencies totaled US$18.2 billion. By 2025, that figure reached US$42.2 billion, more than doubling in a decade. Exports followed a similar pattern, climbing from US$31.8 billion to US$59.7 billion over the same period.

These are not abstract numbers. They represent thousands of corporate treasury decisions, container shipments priced in renminbi, and banking relationships recalibrated for a multipolar currency environment. Thailand’s total trade value sits at approximately US$646 billion in 2025, with foreign exchange transactions for trade processed through commercial banks reaching US$292 billion. The scale demands attention.

Why This Matters Now

Trade settlement in yuan is not new. What changed is velocity and confidence. As regional supply chains deepen their integration with Chinese manufacturing and consumption, Thai exporters and importers increasingly find themselves negotiating contracts where yuan pricing makes operational sense. Paying a Chinese supplier in their home currency can reduce friction. It can also reduce exposure to dollar volatility at moments when the baht is under pressure.

Baht volatility has been the quiet concern in Thai corporate finance circles throughout 2025. Currency diversification offers one hedge, though not a perfect one. The Indian rupee, for comparison, remains below 1% of Thai trade settlements. The yuan’s rise reflects both China’s gravitational pull on regional commerce and a pragmatic recalculation by Thai businesses seeking to manage risk.

    Banking Adapts

Krungsri, formally known as Bank of Ayudhya, has been among the institutions repositioning for this shift. The bank’s multi currency services have expanded as corporate clients seek alternatives to single currency exposure. This is not altruism. Banks profit when clients need more sophisticated foreign exchange products, and the current environment creates demand.

Roong Sanguanruang, Senior Vice President of the Global Markets Planning Division at Krungsri, offered perspective on where the baht might land by year end.

Although the baht has weakened since the beginning of the year, we expect it could strengthen slightly in the final quarter, trading in a range of 32 to 34 baht per US dollar.

That forecast carries the standard caveats. Currency projections depend on variables no single institution controls, from US Federal Reserve policy to Chinese capital flows to Thai domestic politics. The range itself suggests humility about precision.

    The Dollar’s Enduring Grip

None of this diminishes the dollar’s structural advantages. Eighty percent market share is not a position that erodes quickly. Dollar liquidity remains deeper than any alternative. Pricing conventions, contract templates, and banking infrastructure all favor continued dollar dominance in Thai trade finance.

What the yuan’s rise does suggest is optionality. Thai businesses are building capabilities to settle in multiple currencies, and that flexibility has value independent of which currency ultimately grows its share. The infrastructure for currency diversification, once established, can accommodate future shifts that remain difficult to predict.

    Gaps in the Picture

Public data on sectoral adoption remains limited. Which industries are leading the move to yuan settlement? Are these primarily firms with direct Chinese ownership, or is adoption spreading to Thai owned exporters serving Chinese markets? The aggregate figures do not answer these questions, and detailed breakdowns have not been released.

Firm level patterns are similarly opaque. A handful of major corporations could account for a disproportionate share of yuan settlements, or adoption could be distributed across hundreds of small and medium enterprises. Both scenarios carry different implications for how deeply currency diversification has penetrated Thai business culture.

    Looking Forward

Trade settlement currencies evolve slowly until they don’t. The yen’s displacement by the yuan happened without fanfare, a trend visible only in retrospect through banking data. Similar shifts could continue if China’s economic integration with Southeast Asia deepens, or they could plateau if geopolitical tensions complicate cross border finance.

For Thai businesses, the practical takeaway involves preparation rather than prediction. Multi currency banking relationships, treasury teams comfortable with yuan liquidity management, and contracts that allow settlement flexibility all represent prudent positioning. The dollar remains king. But the court has grown more crowded, and Thailand’s trade flows reflect that reality with increasing clarity.

The numbers moved. The institutions adapted. And somewhere in the transaction data, a story about regional economic gravity continues to unfold.
