5 of the Best Trips You Can Take From Bangkok by Private Plane

A weekend away from Bangkok is really a question of arithmetic, and it is the best argument for trips from Bangkok by private plane. You have roughly 60 hours between leaving the office on Friday and getting home on Sunday evening, and the only number that matters is how many of them you spend in transit. Most of the good trips out of this city die on the road before they start.

Six hours each way turns two nights into one useful day. Ninety minutes each way turns the same two nights into a proper trip. The destination barely changes. The travel time changes everything.

Siam Seaplane flies from the private terminal at Don Mueang on a Cessna Grand Caravan 208 EX, and it reaches most of the country from there. These are the five trips that make the strongest case for going by air.

The five trips at a glance

Flight times are from Don Mueang and are approximate.

TripFlight timeHow it runsBest for
Khao Yai40 minutesCharter on requestCool air, vineyards and the national park
Hua Hin50 minutesFixed schedule, out Friday and back SundayAn easy weekend by the sea
Koh Samui2 hoursCharter on requestIsland stays, and the Gulf in Andaman green season
KrabiAround 2 hours 40 minutesCharter on requestLimestone coastline and the first water landing sites
Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai2 hours and 2 hours 15 minutesCharter on requestThe north, food, hills and cooler evenings

Khao Yai, forty minutes and a different climate

Khao Yai
Khao Yai. Fly Bangkok to Khao Yai

The shortest run on the board, and the only one here with nothing to do with the sea.

Khao Yai is cool, green and high. The national park is the draw, the vineyards around it have turned into a proper scene, and the hotels have improved to the point where the area now carries a weekend on its own rather than serving as somewhere to drive through.

The drive is close to three hours on a good day, and considerably worse on a Friday. In the air it is forty minutes, which is the difference between planning a weekend and deciding on one over breakfast on Saturday.

It is also among the cheapest seats the operator sells, which makes it the easiest trip on this list to justify twice in a season.

Hua Hin, the one that runs to a timetable

The Hua Hin coastline
The Hua Hin coastline. Fly Bangkok to Hua Hin

Fifty minutes down the Gulf coast, and the easiest of the five to organise, because Hua Hin is one of only two routes that runs on a fixed schedule rather than on request. It goes out on Fridays and comes back on Sundays, which happens to be exactly the shape of the trip most people want.

The town itself has grown up. The food is better than it was a decade ago, the hotels along the front are built for two night stays rather than passing trade, and the golf is the reason a good number of people go at all.

What makes this the strongest value on the list is what you are escaping. The drive to Hua Hin is the classic Bangkok Friday crawl, three hours that becomes five when the motorway backs up. Fifty minutes buys back most of an evening in each direction.

Koh Samui, without the connection

Ang Thong Marine Park, off Koh Samui
Ang Thong Marine Park, off Koh Samui. Fly Bangkok to Koh Samui

Two hours, and the argument here is about connections rather than distance.

Samui is straightforward to enjoy and tedious to reach. Scheduled flights from Bangkok are limited and priced accordingly, and the alternative involves a bus and a boat with a schedule of its own. The island is set up for short stays, which makes the journey the thing that stops people taking them.

There is a second reason to know this route. Samui sits on a different weather pattern to the Andaman coast, so when Phuket and Krabi are in green season, the Gulf is often having its best months. Being able to cross in two hours makes that a real choice rather than a piece of trivia, and it is as useful in June as it is in January.

Krabi, before the water opens

The Krabi coast
The Krabi coast. Fly Bangkok to Krabi

A little under three hours, the longest of the five, and on this list for what is about to happen there.

The limestone coastline around Ao Nang and Railay is the best in the country and the reason Krabi sells itself. What is new is underneath the aircraft. In May 2026 the Krabi Provincial Marine and Coastal Resources Committee approved three temporary water landing points off Tubkaek Beach, on the coast north of Ao Nang. They are the first in Thailand.

The approval came with conditions worth knowing about, covering safety compliance, spacing between floating docks, an assessment of the effect on marine and coastal resources, and an agreement that the sea space stays shared with the boat operators already working it.

Go now and you fly to the airport. Go in a couple of years and the aircraft lands in front of where you are staying.

Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the pair everyone forgets

Northern Thailand at first light
Northern Thailand at first light. Fly Bangkok to Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is two hours and Chiang Rai two and a quarter, and they are on this list together because the half hour that separates them is the most interesting half hour in the network.

Chiang Mai is the known quantity, and it is known for good reason. The old city, the food, the hills behind it, and enough going on that a long weekend never runs short.

Chiang Rai is what you take when you have done Chiang Mai twice. Quieter, closer to the border, with a different feel entirely and a landscape that opens up as you go north. Reaching it by scheduled air from Bangkok usually means a connection or an awkward hour. Direct, it is fifteen minutes further than Chiang Mai.

Neither of these is a beach, which is precisely why they get overlooked in a city that thinks about weekends in terms of coastline.

What it takes

Fares are quoted per guest or for the whole aircraft, and they scale with flying time. Current pricing for every route sits on Siam Seaplane’s site.

Hua Hin and Pattaya run to a fixed schedule. Everything else on this list is charter on request, which means the aircraft goes when you do rather than when the timetable says.

Doing the sums for your own weekend

The useful exercise is a simple one. Take the trip you have been meaning to make, and write down the total door to door time in each direction, including the Friday traffic and the transfer at the other end.

Under two hours each way, go, by whatever means is cheapest. Over four, it is a three night proposition. Everything in between is where a private aircraft changes the answer.

Bangkok is closer to a great deal of Thailand than the road would have you believe. The roads are just very good at hiding it.

If one of these trips has been sitting on your list for a while, the route pages on Siam Seaplane carry current flight times and fares, and the team can build a charter around your dates.
