Thai Heritage Brands Find New Life Through Culture, Fashion, and Storytelling

Thai Heritage Brands Find New Life Through Culture, Fashion, and Storytelling

At a recent industry session during the Phuket Property Exchange, Frank Cancelloni, Group CEO of the Jim Thompson Group, shared insights into how one of Thailand’s most iconic heritage brands continues to evolve while staying rooted in its identity.

Few brands represent Thailand’s cultural craftsmanship quite like Jim Thompson. Founded more than half a century ago, the company has built its reputation around Thai silk, weaving together traditional textile techniques with modern fashion and lifestyle design.

Today, the brand is celebrating its 75th anniversary, marking the milestone with a series of cultural initiatives and collaborations designed to honour its past while engaging a new generation of global consumers.

A Celebration of Thai Craftsmanship

The anniversary celebrations include a special silk collection, a gala fashion show, and a commemorative coffee table book that documents the brand’s history and creative evolution.

One of the standout projects is Jim and I: The Weaver’s Stories, a storytelling initiative that highlights the artisans and communities behind the silk production. Through twelve voices and twelve personal stories, the project shines a light on the people whose craftsmanship forms the foundation of the brand.

For a company built on heritage, these narratives are just as important as the finished products.

Tradition Meets Modern Pop Culture

Another element driving renewed attention toward Thai heritage brands is global pop culture. The growing international visibility of Thailand through entertainment, hospitality, and travel has created opportunities for companies like Jim Thompson to reach new audiences.

Collaborations with global media properties such as The White Lotus have brought renewed attention to Southeast Asian design and luxury culture. For heritage brands, these moments help bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern lifestyle branding.

Beyond Silk

Under Frank Cancelloni’s leadership, the company has expanded well beyond textiles.

Today the Jim Thompson brand includes:

  • Fashion and accessories
  • Home furnishings and interior textiles
  • Lifestyle retail experiences
  • Hospitality and design collaborations

These expansions allow the company to position itself not simply as a textile manufacturer, but as a global lifestyle brand rooted in Thai culture.

Partnerships in Travel and Hospitality

Another interesting example of this positioning is the company’s partnership with Thai Airways, where Jim Thompson has designed luxury silk sleepwear and amenities for premium passengers.

These collaborations showcase how Thai craftsmanship can seamlessly integrate into international luxury travel experiences.

A Brand Built to Last

More than fifty years after its founding, Jim Thompson continues to demonstrate that authenticity, craftsmanship, and cultural storytelling remain powerful assets in the global luxury market.

In a world increasingly dominated by fast fashion and mass production, brands built on heritage and craftsmanship offer something different: a connection to place, history, and identity.

For Thailand, that cultural legacy remains one of its greatest strengths.
