International Schools in Kuala Lumpur: A Parent’s Guide

Since September 2025, international schools in Malaysia have charged 6% service tax where a student’s annual fees exceed RM 60,000, a threshold most of Kuala Lumpur’s leading schools pass from the early primary years. For parents comparing international schools in Kuala Lumpur, that makes each school’s published fee schedule, and the year it applies to, the natural starting point.

This guide sets out the main curricula, the neighbourhoods where schools cluster, fee bands taken from the schools’ own schedules for 2026/27, when to apply, and how the guardian visa works for a parent accompanying a child at school. It closes with a word on choosing a home that keeps the school run short.

Curricula on offer

International schools in Kuala Lumpur offer a wide choice of curricula. British schools follow the English National Curriculum through to IGCSE and A Levels, with The Alice Smith School, founded in 1946 and one of the city’s oldest international schools, and Garden International School among the best known. American curriculum schools such as The International School of Kuala Lumpur, known as ISKL, and Mont’Kiara International School pair American programmes with the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

For younger children, EtonHouse International School on Persiaran Stonor teaches the IB Primary Years Programme with an inquiry based, Reggio Emilia inspired early years approach for ages 18 months to 12. The city also has French, German, Japanese and other national schools, which suit families planning to return home or move on within their own system.

Where the schools cluster

Mont Kiara from above, home to Kuala Lumpur's largest international school cluster

Mont Kiara and neighbouring Desa ParkCity form the largest cluster for expatriate families. Mont’Kiara International School and Garden International School sit within Mont Kiara, and Desa ParkCity, a planned township with a central park, has its own international school, so many families here walk or take a short drive to class.

The second cluster runs through Ampang and the city centre. ISKL’s campus is in Ampang Hilir, close to the embassy district, and EtonHouse and Sayfol International School are within easy reach of KLCC, while The Alice Smith School’s primary campus is on Jalan Bellamy near the city centre and its secondary campus is in Seri Kembangan to the south. Bukit Jalil and the southern suburbs form a growing third cluster, with newer schools and good highway links.

Applying and timing your move

Students sitting a test in a classroom

Most of the city’s leading international schools begin their year in August. Families usually apply six to twelve months ahead, particularly for popular entry points such as Reception, Year 1 and the start of secondary school, and many schools hold waiting lists. Applications typically ask for recent school reports, a reference and, for some year groups, an assessment or English proficiency check.

Visit campuses in person or online before applying, and ask about class sizes, language support, transport and extracurricular programmes. If your move date is fixed, mention it early, since schools can sometimes hold a place for a mid year start.

The student pass and the guardian visa

Children who are not Malaysian attend school on a Student Pass issued by the Immigration Department, and international schools need approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs to enrol international students. Children of Employment Pass holders and MM2H participants usually study as dependants on their parent’s pass. Schools advise starting the paperwork three to six months before the first day.

Where neither parent holds a long term pass, one parent can apply for a guardian visa. The Immigration Department lists biological, adoptive and legal parents and grandparents among eligible guardians, and guardians may not work or run a business while in Malaysia. Processing can take two months or longer, and schools such as The Alice Smith School advise sponsoring parents to show monthly income of around RM 25,000 for one child, so it pays to begin early.

Choosing a home near school

International schools in Kuala Lumpur give families a strong choice of curricula, and the school you choose usually decides the neighbourhood you live in. Start with fee schedules and admissions dates, then look for a home that keeps the daily journey short.

For Mont Kiara’s schools, take a look at WOLO MK Residences in Mont Kiara, with a kids’ library, a residence nursery, a children’s play area and family pools on its Level 7 facility floor. For EtonHouse, ISKL, Sayfol and The Alice Smith School’s primary campus, explore Golden Crown Residence beside TRX, which has its own kindergarten and playground.
