Amazean Jungle Thailand by UTMB: World-Class Trail Running in Betong’s Rainforests

Amazean Jungle Thailand by UTMB Brings World-Class Trail Running to Betong’s Rainforests

The Amazean Jungle Thailand by UTMB debuts as part of the UTMB World Series Thailand, turning Betong’s emerald rainforests into a proving ground for world-class athletes and adventure seekers. Scheduled for May 1,3, 2026, the event highlights Thailand’s natural tourism potential while spotlighting Betong trail running as a driver of sustainable regional growth in Yala Province.

Backed by Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports and regional partners, the race blends endurance sport with cultural immersion, positioning the country’s southern borderlands as a new epicenter for adventure travel and community-led hospitality.

Government Strategy Powers Sports Tourism Push

Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Sports Authority of Thailand, the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre for Yala, and the National Sports Development Fund have aligned behind Amazean as a strategic platform to elevate Yala’s profile. Their unified support underscores a broader national agenda to nurture sports tourism in emerging destinations.

“Showcasing Betong’s natural beauty and developing it as an international sports destination,” affirmed Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, as cited in official UTMB World Series communications.

A May 2022 test event attracted over 1,000 runners from 14 countries and generated an estimated THB 140 million (≈ USD 3.8 million) for local communities, according to Nation Thailand. The measurable economic lift, and positive global exposure, demonstrated how endurance events can stimulate Thailand’s southern border economy while advancing soft-power objectives.

Reflecting growing demand, UTMB Group expanded into Thailand “to broaden offering to runners with the confirmation of a brand-new event in Thailand,” noted Endurance Sportswire, placing Amazean alongside marquee UTMB races across Europe, North America, and Asia.

Race Format and Course Details

Designed for a spectrum of experience levels, Amazean features multiple distances. The flagship BETONG 100M covers approximately 100 kilometers of technical rainforest trails. The FLOWER 20K offers a 17-kilometer route with ~400 meters of elevation gain and a six-hour cutoff. Additional options include 92-kilometer, 54-kilometer, and 26-kilometer courses.

All races start at the Betong Mongkhonrit Tunnel and finish in Betong city center. Single-stage routes traverse steep, rooty paths and humid jungle near the Thai,Malaysia border, demanding precise pacing and resilience. To thrive, runners should pack moisture-wicking layers, trail shoes with aggressive tread, and a disciplined hydration and electrolyte strategy.

Though accessible via regional hubs, Betong’s remoteness rewards advance planning. Beyond race day, the town stages a Betong food festival, traditional bow competitions, and light-and-sound shows, making the weekend a celebratory, family-friendly experience.
