Hong Kong’s Tourism Surge: 36.67 Million Visitors in Eight Months and a Packed Autumn Ahead
August 2026 was the city’s biggest month for arrivals since the pandemic, and the rest of the year looks even busier.
Something has shifted in Hong Kong. Not gradually, not tentatively, but with the kind of momentum you can feel on the ground, in the queues at Lo Wu, in the wait for a table at your usual Sheung Wan spot that used to seat you immediately. The city recorded about 36.67 million visitor arrivals from January to August 2026, Hong Kong Tourism Board figures reported on 15 September 2026 confirm, an 11 percent jump over the same stretch last year. August alone brought 5.46 million arrivals, up 6 percent year on year and the highest monthly total since the pandemic.
For anyone planning an autumn trip, this is worth paying attention to. Hong Kong is not just recovering anymore. It is filling up.
The numbers behind the comeback
Breaking down the August data gives a clearer picture of who is driving this. Mainland China remains the dominant source market by a wide margin. Provisional HKTB figures put Mainland arrivals at 4,569,228 for August, an 8 percent increase over the same month in 2025. Non-Mainland arrivals came in at 887,092.
The more interesting story sits in the long-haul segment.
Arrivals from long-haul markets reached 289,489 in August, an 18 percent year on year gain. Visitors from newer, emerging markets rose 10 percent to 65,142. That kind of growth suggests Hong Kong’s appeal is broadening, not just deepening in familiar corridors.
Short-haul markets across Asia were softer. Arrivals from neighbouring countries dropped 16 percent to 404,828. HKTB attributes that dip to limited flight capacity on some routes, elevated fuel surcharges, and intensifying competition from other regional destinations. Fair enough. When Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok and even lesser known spots like Da Nang are fighting hard for the same weekend traveller, some erosion is predictable.
Still, the overall trajectory is unmistakable. Hong Kong visitor arrivals in 2026 are tracking well above 2025, and the city’s infrastructure is absorbing the volume without the chaos you might expect.
August’s event calendar did the heavy lifting
Raw numbers tell you volume. They do not tell you why someone got on the plane. In August, Hong Kong stacked its calendar with the kind of events that pull specific audiences who then stay, spend, and explore. The Hong Kong Football Festival 2026 brought sports crowds. The 16th Worldwide Chinese Life Insurance Congress and the 2026 IDA Annual Conference drew the MICE segment. And the TMElive International Music Awards gave the city a pop culture moment that played well across social media in the Mainland and beyond.
This is the strategy HKTB has been leaning into for the past two years: less generic destination marketing, more programming that gives people a reason to book now rather than someday.

Golden Week is days away, and autumn is loaded
If August felt busy, October is going to be something else entirely. China’s National Day Golden Week runs from 1 to 7 October 2026. Anyone who has experienced Golden Week in Hong Kong knows the drill: the harbourfront shoulder to shoulder, Ocean Park at capacity, dim sum waitlists that stretch past noon. Cross-border checkpoints at Lok Ma Chau and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will be under serious pressure.
Book ahead. That is not a suggestion, it is arithmetic.
Beyond Golden Week, HKTB has lined up a dense programme for the final quarter. The International Lantern Spectacular should draw crowds through mid-autumn. Halloween activations are planned across the city. The Hong Kong Cyclothon returns for cycling enthusiasts. And two of the city’s marquee year-end events, the Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival and Hong Kong WinterFest, will anchor the calendar through December, followed by the New Year Countdown Celebrations along Victoria Harbour.

What this means if you are heading there
Here is where it gets practical. If you are based in Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta, or anywhere within a few hours’ flight, Hong Kong remains an easy long weekend. But the short-haul capacity issue HKTB flagged is real. On some routes, seat availability is tighter than you would expect, and fares reflect it. Compare options early, look at midweek departures, and consider whether Hong Kong Airlines or a low-cost carrier has opened up anything new on your corridor.
Hotel pricing in Tsim Sha Tsui and Central has already started creeping up for late October and November. Properties near the Wine and Dine Festival venue along the harbour will command premiums. If you have loyalty points burning a hole in your account, this is a reasonable time to use them.
For long-haul travellers, the 18 percent growth in that segment signals something worth noting: Hong Kong is once again competing seriously with Tokyo and Seoul as a primary Asia destination, not just a transit stop. The city’s dining scene has only sharpened since the pandemic. Its arts district in the West Kowloon Cultural District has matured. And frankly, the exchange rate makes it more accessible for visitors holding US dollars or euros than it was three years ago.
A city back in its rhythm
I walked the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade last month, late in the evening, the skyline lit up across the harbour in that way that still makes you pause no matter how many times you have seen it. The crowd was thick, diverse, multilingual. Families, couples, solo travellers with cameras. A few years ago, this stretch felt emptier than it should have. Now it feels like Hong Kong again.
The 36.67 million arrivals figure is provisional. HKTB may revise it when final monthly statistics are published. But provisional or not, the direction is clear.
Hong Kong is not waiting for anyone to rediscover it. It has already moved on.
